software freedom, security, privacy and anonymity, in the context of the modern surveillance stateDate: 7/29/13, 7pm
Location: Lucy Parsons Center, 358A Centre St, Jamaica Plain Join us for a discussion led by our friend Andrew: How can the freedom to use free/libero software as everyone wishes, to copy it, change it, and share those changes be the most neglected yet vital link for our digital privacy and empowerment? What are common security mistakes, and what are the tools we have to protect ourselves, our conversations, our browsing, and our abilities from intentionally designed limitations and inquiry? A New [Changing] Website! We're trying to work in new ideas, old ideas we have been working on for the past couple of months, and a system that is as helpful and sustainable as possible. This gargantuan project is going to look plenty different over the next few months, and we hope you stay with us.

Who We Are and What We BelieveThe Greater Boston Free School is an experimental collective of teachers and students who offer classes to the public. The college runs on anarchic, decentralized, voluntary, self-managed, and horizontal principles, and we provide an open-ended framework for a non-hierarchical, informal, yet still academically rigorous class structure. Nothing else other than the quality of the classes compels students’ voluntary attendance. Our teachers decide when to teach, what to teach, how to teach, and where to teach, with the development of their students in consideration. Our campus is non-existent and therefore our classrooms are omnipresent. Payment, bartering, or exchange of value is neither encouraged nor deterred. Rather than receiving grades or evaluations from the college, individuals assess their own growth, and if desired, teachers are encouraged to come up with their own ways of providing feedback to students. We seek to broaden and enrich our activities by welcoming teachers with creativity, purpose, and a feeling of responsibility to knowledge, by soliciting students who are curious and game for a challenge, and by exploring and experimenting with new environments and pedagogies.
